“Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” — John 7:38

It is not surprising that since I began working in a bakery I understand the Parable of Leaven more clearly now!  Found in Matthew 13:33 and Luke 13:20-21, Jesus asks, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to?  It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough.”

Yeast grows and transforms whatever it contacts.  It changes a dense mass of dough into a well-risen loaf of bread!  When we accept Christ into our lives, His grace grows in our hearts and changes us from the inside out.  As our lives are transformed, we begin to change the world around us.

But in Luke 12:1, Jesus also warns,
“Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.”   This takes on a different connotation — yeast here is a symbol of sin, which, like yeast, has the ability to multiply and grow.  Paul also discusses the danger of sin spreading in Galatians 5:9, “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.”

So, which type of yeast is working in the “dough” of your life: sin that, though it may start small, will continually grow in your life, or the kingdom of God that will increasingly change you more fully into the image of Jesus Christ?
