Preparing to Bloom, by Gini Kittle

Lately, I’ve been asking myself why the Church (that’s you and I) is still so much like the world and so little like Jesus Christ. So much of what I do on a daily basis and so many of my concerns seem to be no different than any nonbeliever. Would an outsider observing my life on an average week day clearly see my life as being “like Christ” and not pretty much like any average person?

As I was planting my planters the last few weeks, I got some insight on this. I realized that the soil my little flowers are planted in makes all the difference for how they grow and bloom. No matter how nice they might appear when I buy them, they will become stunted and unproductive if I surround their roots with old, dried-up, worn-out dirt. If the soil in a particular planting bed or pot is poor, I must make certain to add the proper mix to enrich it and make to appropriate for my plants.

It’s the same for you and I as believers. What we choose to surround our lives with and draw strength and nourishment from will determine if our lives will blossom and bring forth the fragrance of Christ. Let us choose daily to have our lives planted in the things of God even while living in this world. Even in the midst of the hecticness of life, we must decide to have the focus of our hearts — the things we listen to, the things we say, the things we spend our free time upon, and the things we hope for and desire — fixed on the eternal things of the kingdom.
