Persevere … Till You Break Through

Today, I woke up to another rainy Fall day.  But, when I looked outside to the west, I saw a distant line of demarcation and clear skies coming our way.  This reminded me of a time several years ago when I was taking off in an airplane on an overcast day.  The plane suddenly burst through the clouds to reveal the sun brightly shining.  I wanted to yell down at my city, “The sun is here.  It’s still shining … don’t despair!”

That’s what we all need to remember when life begins to look dark and gloomy.  In Ephesians 6:18, as Paul was teaching about the armor of God he instructs us,
“praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance.”  And James 5:11 encourages us, “Indeed we count them blessed who endure.”

“Endure” means: “to remain in existence; to last.”  One of the synonyms for “endure” is “persevere.”  “Persevere” means: “to persist in a state, enterprise, or undertaking in spite of counterinfluences, opposition, or discouragement.”

I believe these are days when the body of Christ needs to be encouraged to persevere!  Tough times are here and we need to choose to persevere — pressing in deeper to the presence of God and digging deeper into His Word.  If we will endure, God will break through and we will be blessed.  After all, the Word of God has promised us, “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him” (James 1:12).
